BEAUFORT SEA, Arctic Circle (March 6, 2022) – Cmdr. Dan McNab, left, commanding officer of the Virginia-class fast attack submarine USS Illinois (SSN 786), speaks with Adm. Frank Caldwell, Jr., director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, during Ice Exercise (ICEX 2022). Along with the Los Angeles-class USS Pasadena (SSN 752), USS Illinois is one of two fast attack submarines participating in ICEX 2022. ICEX 2022 is a three-week exercise that allows the Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic, increase experience in the region, advance understanding of the Arctic environment, and continue to develop relationships with other services, allies, and partner organizations.
