BEAUFORT SEA, Arctic Circle (March 7, 2022) – Cmdr. Daniel McNab, commanding officer of the Virginia-class fast attack submarine USS Illinois (SSN 786), walks with Rear Adm. Douglas G. Perry, director, Undersea Warfare Division of the Chief of Naval Operations' staff, toward the submarine during Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2022. USS Illinois was moored to a sheet of floating Arctic Ocean ice approximately 170 nautical miles offshore. ICEX 2022 is a three-week exercise that allows the Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic, increase experience in the region, advance understanding of the Arctic environment, and continue to develop relationships with other services, allies, and partner organizations.
