JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 23, 2022) - Chief Hospital Corpsman Eddy Cardenas, senior enlisted leader for Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s directorate for nursing services, reviews the Intensive Care Unit’s supply inventory with Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class William Barrier. Cardenas, a native of Clinton, Oklahoma, says, “Our role as chief petty officers is to ensure that our sailors are prepared and ready for the next battle. Here at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, it's ensuring our sailors have what they need to take care of our patients – both at home and downrange." On April 1, 1893, Navy General Order 409 established the rank of chief petty officer, the highest enlisted rank at that time in the U.S. Navy. Serving as both technical experts and leaders, chief petty officers are recognized as the backbone of the Navy. Newly commissioned junior officers and sailors often receive training from chief petty officers during their indoctrination into the Navy.
