U.S. Marine Corps Col. Speros Koumparakis, commanding officer, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, speaks to U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, during a visit to MCBH, April 13, 2022. The visit allowed the chairman, Sen. Mazie Hirono, and Senate staff to receive updates on security conditions in the Indo-Pacific region and better understand Marine Corps efforts to modernize in order to counter threats to peace and stability in the region. Under Force Design 2030, the Marine Corps’ modernization concept, Marines will operate within an adversary’s weapons engagement zone in order to provide battlespace awareness to the joint force and deny an adversary’s navy use of the sea.
