U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, receives a brief during a visit to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, April 13, 2022. The chairman and Sen. Mazie Hirono visited the installation in order to meet with Marine commanders and staff in Hawaii. During the visit, the senators received updates on U.S. national security interests in the region and learned about Marine Corps efforts to modernize the force and address threats to regional peace and stability. Under the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030 modernization concept, Marines will operate within an adversary’s weapons engagement zone in order to provide battlespace awareness to the joint force and deny an adversary’s navy use of the sea.
