The exhibit American Witnesses, currently on display at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, includes the story of Army Sgt. Leon Bass, of the 183rd Combat Engineer Battalion. Bass was 20 years old in 1945 when he and his unit entered the Buchewald concentration camp days after it was liberated. He described the survivors he saw as mere "skin and bones. It’s hard for me to understand why anybody could have been treated this way.”
