Harold Toney of the 8th Infantry Association watches as fellow association member Colonel Nick Johnson retires from the Illinois Army National Guard. Toney is also the Commander of the American Legion's Dorie Miller Post 915 in Chicago. Col. Johnson commanded the 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment based in Chicago's General Richard Jones Armory. The 1/178th Infantry holds the lineage to the famous all African-American "Fighting" 8th Infantry. Johnson would go on to brigade command with the 65th Troop Command.
Col. Craig Holan, who commanded the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, retired after nearly 40 years of service with Col. Johnson, who served for 32 years. The dual retirement ceremony was held on May 14 at the Illinois Military Academy on Camp Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois.
