Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Lorin Selby speaks to recent graduates of the United States Naval Academy after they gave their counternarcotics presentations to leaders of the SCOUT initiative.
Multiple teams engaged in a week-long "design thinking" challenge: starting with dozens of off-the-wall ideas, USNA grads systematically and strategically honed their ideas into solutions that support the JIATF-S area of operations (AO), namely, counternarcotics measures in the open sea. The solutions are designed to address the challenge of having limited resources to approach a large AO and be technologically savvy -- graduates pitched improvements in data classification for sophisticated machine-learning algorithms, developments in natural language processing and deploying drones and sensors.
