Illinois National Guard and 1st Cavalry Division Join Skokie in Honoring it Independence Day Military Grand Marshals

The Illinois National Guard and the 1st Cavalry Division joined Skokie (Illinois) in honoring three Army Veterans who were to be the Military Grand Marshals of the Skokie Independence Day Parade on July 4 when the parade was suddenly cancelled because of the shootings at the parade in nearby Highland Park. The Veterans were: 89 year-old Master Sgt. (retired) Henry "Hank" Gould (center in uniform) who served for 24 years in the Illinois National Guard and 50 years as a pharmacist in Skokie; Vietnam Veteran Gerald Jaffe (to the right of Gould), who served with the 1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam and went on to become a local business owner in Skokie; and Staff Sgt. Paul Plotnick (far left), who served in the Army Reserves from 1968 to 1975 and would go on to become a community leader and successful attorney. The Veterans were honored at the Aug. 15 Village of Skokie (Illinois) Board of Trustees meeting with Maj. James Brock (in Army Service Uniform) of the Illinois Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 122nd Field Artillery Regiment making the presentations to the Veterans. All three Veterans received a letter from Maj. Gen. Rich Neely, the Adjutant General of Illinois and Commander of the Illinois National Guard. Gould also received gifts from his old unit and Brock's current unit, the 1-122nd Field Artillery. Jaffe received a letter from 1st Air Cavalry Brigade Commander Col. Timothy Jaeger, who wrote from the brigade’s deployment to Europe. The 1st Team also sent Jaffe a unit patch and T-shirt. (U.S. Army photo by Spc.
