U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Angel Salgado, infantry mortar team leader with 3d Littoral Combat Team, 3d Marine Littoral Regiment, 3d Marine Division observes 81mm mortar round impacts during exercise Bougainville I at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Aug. 23, 2022. Forward observers located at an observer position down range communicated with the fire direction center to ensure high-explosive rounds fired from an M252 81mm mortar system land on their intended targets. Bougainville I allows fire teams and squads with 3d LCT to rehearse small unit cohesion, lethality, and survivability to set conditions for company offensive, defensive, and Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations during future exercises.
