Lt. Gen. George P. Hays received the Medal of Honor for demonstrating courage under fire in the Second Battle of the Marne, during World War I. But he is known at Fort Drum for having led the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II. Following the expansion project that brought the newly-activated 10th Mountain Division to Fort Drum, the division’s headquarters building was named in honor of Hays. (U.S. Army photo)
