An instrumented manikin is used to evaluate potential hazards to the aircrew of an aircraft subjected to a bird strike at the Bird Impact Range at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, in the mid-1970s. The “X” above the head of the manikin marks the point of impact. The test facility, commonly referred to as the “Chicken Gun,” was used to simulate in-flight bird strikes to aircraft canopies and other materials by launching chicken carcasses at test articles.
