Kittery, ME (December 22, 2022) - Work is currently underway at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to reroute major utilities around the Multi-Mission Dry Dock #1 construction site. This is part of the Navy’s efforts to optimize dry dock operations for decades of safe and efficient use. Originally installed around the time of the Civil War, these utilities have been improved over time as technology advanced and the Shipyard expanded. Examples of the shipyard’s historic utility systems have been encountered during excavations including vaulted brick storm drains and cisterns, ceramic pipes or duct banks, and iron pipes.
