230112-N-EV253-1121 SAN DIEGO (Jan. 12, 2023) – A San Clemente Bell’s sparrow, formerly a protected species of bird under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, perches on a California box thorn in its natural habitat during a media embark to San Clemente Island, Jan. 12, 2023. During the embark, representatives from the U.S. Navy spoke with various media entities reporting on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s recent announcement to delist four species of plant and one species of bird endemic to San Clemente Island from the Endangered Species list, thanks to the efforts of Naval Base Coronado and Commander, Pacific Fleet wildlife biologists and botanists. In addition to the San Clemente Bell’s sparrow, the specimens delisted include the San Clemente Island paintbrush, lotus, larkspur and bush-mallow.
