230112-N-EV253-1224 SAN DIEGO (Jan. 12, 2023) – A specimen of San Clemente Island lotus, also known as San Clemente Island broom, formerly a protected species of plant under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, during a media embark to San Clemente Island, Jan. 12, 2023. During the embark, representatives from the U.S. Navy spoke with various media entities reporting on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s recent announcement to delist four species of plant and one species of bird endemic to San Clemente Island from the Endangered Species list, thanks to the efforts of Naval Base Coronado and Commander, Pacific Fleet wildlife biologists and botanists. In addition to lotus, the specimens delisted include the San Clemente Island paintbrush, larkspur, bush-mallow, and San Clemente Bell’s sparrow.
