This Fort Riley Friday we visit Army City a.k.a. “The Zone”, a commercial district located between Camp Funston and the installation boundary with the city of Ogden in what is now an open field south of Huebner Road.

The area was about four city blocks in length and it was built expressly for the purposes of entertaining Soldiers. It consisted of hotels, clothing stores, a movie theater, pool hall, and an arcade. There were organizations such as the YMCA, YWCA, and a church which held regular Sunday Services.

Army City’s activity decreased dramatically at the close of World War I and it ceased to exist in the early 1920s when many of the businesses were destroyed by a fire.
