ARLINGTON, Va. (Feb. 15, 2023) A headstone memorializing seven unknown USS Maine Sailors at the Arlington National Cemetery. During the evening of Feb. 15, 1898, Maine sank when its forward gunpowder magazines exploded, killing nearly three-quarters of the battleship's crew. Naval History and Heritage Command held a commemoration ceremony for the 125th anniversary of the explosion and sinking of Maine Feb. 15.
