ARLINGTON, Va. (Feb. 15, 2023) Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) Director Samuel J. Cox, U.S. Navy rear admiral (retired), speaks to audience members during a commemoration ceremony for the 125th anniversary of the explosion and sinking of USS Maine at the USS Maine Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery Feb. 15. In January 1898, Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba, to protect American interests during the long-standing revolt of the Cubans against the Spanish government. During the evening of Feb. 15, Maine sank when its forward gunpowder magazines exploded, killing nearly three-quarters of the battleship's crew.
