The Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Orlando VAMC) Director Mr. Timothy J. Cooke (C) speaks with Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) representatives, Family and Veteran Liaison, Mr. Stephen Thompson (L) and External Family Relations Ms. Kristina Schmidt during a visit to their facility in Orlando, Florida, Feb. 23, 2023.
Representatives from the DPAA Outreach and Communications Directorate visited the Orlando VAMC to learn about their POW/MIA programs scheduled for April and September. They met with senior leaders during their visit and received a detailed overview of the medical center.
The team at the Orlando VAMC has a designated POW Coordinator to provide support to any POWs seeking medical care directly from them. The DPAA representatives stressed the importance of raising awareness of the agency's mission and exploring potential collaborations with the VA to ensure that the stories of the POWs in their care continue to be honored and recognized.
In addition to the medical center's programs, the DPAA representatives toured the Simulation Learning, Evaluation, Assessment, and Research Network (SimLearn) laboratory. This lab provides a safe learning environment that enhances diagnostic, procedural, and communication skills to support quality care and the best possible outcomes. The SimLearn laboratory is the central hub for coordinating all national VA simulation-based clinical training activities.
