Johnnie Brower, longtime Utqiagvik resident describes the process of butchering a whale for muktuk (skin and blubber of a whale) to Airmen from Alaskan NORAD Region, Alaskan Command and Eleventh Air Force (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson) during Kivgiq at Barrow High School in Utqiagvik, Alaska, Feb. 4, 2023. Kivgiq is an ancient Iñupiaq tradition, which unites North Slope communities in a celebration of Native dance and fellowship. Military members from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson visited Utqiagvik for a site visit of Point Barrow Long Range Radar Site, as well as to engage with the whaling community of Utqiagvik, whose welcoming and continued support of the military makes the Point Barrow mission possible.
