When Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Richard Vaughn was assigned to 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine with Kilo Company, 2nd Platoon, 3rd Squadron, he was involved in Operation Phantom Fury, a two-month battle - considered by many to be the bloodiest of the Iraq War - fought in the ravaged cityscape of Al Fallujah, 2004, against a determined enemy. He was presented the Purple Heart afterwards for his action during that time (Official Navy photo by Douglas H Stutz, NHB/NMRTC Bremerton public affairs officer).
