U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District Project Engineer Capt. Ben Ketchum discusses expansion plans for the Amitié Primary School on Oyem, Gabon with U.S. Libreville Embassy Chief of the Office of Security Cooperation Cmdr. Lisa C. Berg during a pre-construction site visit on February 28, 2023. The planned expansion of the overcrowded school is being funded through U.S. Africa Command’s Humanitarian Assistance program with design and construction managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in close partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Gabon. Projects like this one facilitate greater access to education for local children, which reduces stress on other aging schools nearby and supports the improvement of economic opportunities across the region.
