Michael Hooks, left, 11th Civil Engineer Squadron tanks program manager, and Amberleigh Ray, right, 11th CES recycling and solid waste program manager, measure the size of a mussel during a mussel release event, April 3, 2023, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C. JBAB, in partnership with Anacostia Watershed Society, deployed and began monitoring the young freshwater mussels in April 2022; this event signified the mussels’ “graduation” and send-off to their permanent homes in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers off the JBAB shoreline. The mussels were deployed to clean the rivers adjoining JBAB; a single mussel can filter more than five gallons of water per day, removing harmful pollutants and debris while improving the health of the river.
