Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway releases more than 23,000 cubic feet of water per second March 10, 2023, during a break in a series of atmospheric river rainfall events. The auxiliary spillway, completed by USACE and its federal, state, and local partners in 2017, allows operators to make significant water releases sooner than it could on the main dam due to its gates sitting 50 feet lower in elevation and more safely because it can get water through the flood risk management system ahead of forecasted rain events. The $900-million cooperative effort was designed to improve the safety of Folsom Dam and to reduce the flood risk for approximately 2.5 million people in Sacramento, California.
