Harley Smith is a junior at Douglas High School in Gardnerville, Nev. As a toddler, Smith was diagnosed with congenital hearing loss and is deaf. Smith has faced added obstacles when it came to communicating, learning, and competing, but her determination combined with her intricate support system of family, interpreters, instructors, and friends has led to her success both within the classroom and her JROTC program. Pictured is some of Smith's artwork, a hand showing the sign for "I really love you." (Photo provided by the Smith Family)
