A soldier from the Ghanaian Army puts on his African Lion 2023 patch at the official start of the training exercise at Tamale, Ghana, June 5, 2023. African Lion is an annual training event consisting of military personnel from the U.S., Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, and Tunisia. The exercise increases the capabilities and interoperability of the nations to respond to threats within Africa and strengthen ties between the U.S. and participating nations. Approximately 8,000 personnel and 18 nations will participate in African Lion 2023, U.S. Africa Command's largest annual combined, joint exercise spanning multiple countries from May 13 - June 18, 2023.
