The remains of U.S. Navy Chief Machinist’s Mate Ralph Derrington rest on centerpiece during an interment ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, June 20, 2023. Family members and service members attended the ceremony to pay tribute to Derrington, who was accounted for on March 25, 2021. Derrington, 42, of Columbus, Ohio, killed during World War II, was accounted for on March 25, 2021, by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. On Dec. 7, 1941, Derrington was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to quickly capsize. The attack resulted in the deaths of 429 crewmen, including Derrington. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
