U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Matthew T. Leeds, Medical Leading Petty Officer, assigned to II MEF Expeditionary Operations Training Group (EOTG) poses for a portrait in front of a medical supply cabinet at EOTG Headquarters, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, May 16, 2023. His role at EOTG is the operations and personnel manager for the medical branch within EOTG where he ensures that there are an adequate number of corpsmen to be distributed to the different training areas that EOTG is responsible for. The position also entails working with the different branches and sections at EOTG to develop medical training through casualty scenarios throughout the pre-deployment training program. One of the biggest challenges of the position is providing realistic training for Corpsmen.

"We want to help Corpsmen train how they fight, so providing realistic training is extremely important," Leeds said. "It’s hard to simulate a true casualty due to a plethora of reasons. We provide realistic moulage to simulated patients to really help the trainees get in the mindset of training to the standard of working on real casualties. It's important to be able to make changes to personnel and scenarios as quickly as possible in order to facilitate proper training."

By coordinating with other branches' and sections' officers and staff noncommissioned officers, Leeds is able to ensure medical support needs are met during training and that corpsman have an extensive background in Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) as well as experience working with a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

"The medical team at EOTG does a phenomenal job proctoring casualty scenarios and developing realistic wound patterns and injuries that may be sustained on the battlefield," Leeds added. "This provides an extra layer of stress on the training unit and forces them to have a plan to handle situations where they take casualties."

EOTG plays an integral role in ensuring that outgoing MEUs are ready to respond as a forward-deployed, sea-based MAGTF, capable of conducting amphibious operations as a crisis-response force-in-readiness, as well as conducting contingency operations across the full spectrum of military operations.
