Maj. Gen. Brett Sylvia, commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Walker, sergeant major of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) render a salute while the national anthem plays at the Operation Market Garden memorial during a commemoration ceremony in Sint-Oedenrode, Netherlands, Sept. 17, 2023.
On Sept. 17, 1945 Allied forces jumped into the Netherlands in order to liberate the Dutch people from nazi occupation and to establish a foothold for an advance into Germany. Although the allies did not accomplish their main tasks of securing the bridges in Eindhoven, Arnhem and Nijmegen, the operation was the first step in the eventual liberation of the Netherlands from nazi occupation.
