U.S. Army Master Sgt. Eric Lawson, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) team sergeant, and U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Kevin Phong, DPAA linguist, use a generator and hose to pump water out of an excavated area from a previous mission during a recovery mission site in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Sept. 21, 2023. DPAA personnel and Lao citizens work together on investigations and excavations throughout the country between 30 - 45 days per mission to locate fallen U.S. service members. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for American service members. There are still 288 missing Americans in Laos from the Vietnam War. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. David Owsianka)
