Lao citizens build a wet screening station during a recovery mission site in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Sept. 23, 2023. Personnel with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) work with local personnel in search of a fallen service member. Recovered remains believed to be those of Americans are transferred to DPAA’s laboratory in Hawaii for further analysis and identification by forensic anthropologists. Since 1985, the United States and Lao governments have worked closely together to find and recover unaccounted-for American service members. There are still 288 missing Americans in Laos from the Vietnam War. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. David Owsianka)
