USAID recently met with Tunisian handball star Heykel Megannem and his wife Dora Djemal, cofounders of the Fovea Group. Fovea runs training academies for handball and other sports, giving hundreds of children access to expert coaching and opportunities to compete.
USAID and its partners helped Fovea develop a business plan, identify a growth strategy, and secure more than $500,000 to finance its expansion.
The company is growing fast. Between 2016 and today, it increased from 100 to over 600 students, and from 4 coaches to 25, operating across seven academies. Fovea is also opening four new retail stores to sell clothes and gear. It has an exclusive deal with a Danish brand to manufacture clothing locally, bringing additional jobs to Tunis.
Fovea also aims to increase the representation of women athletes in the Tunisian sports landscape.
