The original “Squawkin Hawk,” a B-17 Flying Fortress from World War II, was the first in the 100th Bomb Group to complete 50 combat missions. Built in Seattle, it was one of a 100-plane production block – a whole group of four-engine B-17 bombers manufactured to the set of design specifications between the end of March and beginning of April 1943. On Oct. 10, 2023, 80 years since the original first flew, the 100th Air Refueling Wing unveiled their latest heritage nose art, “Squawkin Hawk,” on one of KC-135 Stratotankers at Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England, with family members of the original World War II crew in attendance.
