John Chopp, a wildlife biologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, surveys the shoreline with a spotting scope at Shenango River Lake in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, Oct. 24, 2023. The survey is the first official data collection for sandhill cranes sitings in the Shenango River Recreation Area. No sandhill cranes were recorded during survey, but similar surveys – such as those for bald eagles – have been done for more than 20 years in the recreation area as part of ongoing wildlife management efforts.
