ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Nov. 2, 2023) The U.S. Naval Academy Acting Superintendent Rear Adm. Fred Kacher speaks to guests at the renaming ceremony of Calvert Road in honor of former U.S. Naval Academy 46th Superintendent Vice Adm. James F. Calvert. During his tenure he replaced the standardized military curriculum with the introduction of 20 new majors, and championed the funding and development of Nimitz Library. The name change from Buchanan Road is a result of the recommendation by the Congressional Naming Commission, which provided recommendations for all Department of Defense items that commemorate the Confederate States of America or any person who served voluntarily with the CSA.
