U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Aden Erickson, the mess non-commissioned officer at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia and the youngest Marine in the unit, is passed a piece of the Marine Corps birthday cake from the oldest Marine, Gunnery Sgt. Kerry Keyes (ret.), a former Infantry Unit Leader, during the 248th Marine Corps Birthday Ball ceremony in Bogota, Colombia, Nov. 18, 2023. At each Marine Corps Birthday Ball, a piece of cake is passed from the oldest Marine present to the youngest Marine, signifying the passing of experience and knowledge from the old to the young of the Corps. The Marine Corps birthday, on Nov. 10, 1775, is celebrated every year to commemorate the birth of the Corps and honor the service and sacrifices of all Marines, past and present.
