    William Wierda, a historic architect from Technical Center of Expertise for the Preservation of Historic Structures, measures a column of a historic building on Maui, Jan. 18. The team from the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assisted the Hawaii Wildfires Recovery Mission on a Federal Emergency Management Agency mission assigned task order to assess structures in the Lahaina National Historic Landmark District. The team was not required to wear the hoodies of their protective suits because of the low risk of contact with ash or debris while evaluating structures and buildings. Wierda is wearing a reflective vest but it was not required on this evaluation as there was no risk of vehicular traffic. The buildings were damaged in the August 8, 2023 wildfire on Maui.
