Kelvin Chan, a structural engineer from the Technical Center of Expertise for the Preservation of Historic Structures, photographs a feature of a historic structure to record its characteristics on Maui, Jan. 21. Chan is one of three members of a Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team that assisted the Hawaii Wildfires Recovery Mission on a Federal Emergency Management Agency mission assigned task order to assess structures in the Lahaina National Historic Landmark District. The team was not required to wear the hoodies of their protective suits because of the low risk of contact with ash or debris while evaluating structures and buildings. The buildings were damaged in the August 8, 2023 wildfires on Maui.
