Jordan Smith, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) team leader uses specialized tools to dig up possible metal in a rice paddy in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Jan. 13, 2024. Team members use a small shovel and a pin pointer device to locate metal in the ground that could indicate the site of an aircraft crash. A DPAA team spent several weeks surveying sites in Southern China in order to provide vital information for future recovery missions. Approximately 690 unaccounted-for American personnel from World War II are believed to be located within modern-day PRC. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. John Miller)
