Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) historian Ms. Claire Barnewolt conducts an interview with a possible eyewitness during a site survey in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on Jan. 13, 2024. Interviews are a critical component to the investigative process, often giving DPAA teams a better insight on what conditions may have looked like during the time of the incident as well as how weather may affect possible recovery missions in the future. Approximately 690 unaccounted-for American personnel from World War II are believed to be located within modern-day PRC. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. John Miller)
