U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Clint Sovie, right, the logistics officer with 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, awards a French Fourragere to Staff Sgt. Elias Gonzalez, the ammo chief with 5th Marines, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Feb. 2, 2024. France awarded the fourragere to the Marines and Sailors of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments in 1918 for their heroism and bravery in the battles of Belleau Wood, Soissons and Champagne during World War I. To this day, the French Fourragere is exclusively awarded to Marines who serve in the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments, serving as a testament to the enduring traditions and history shared by those units.
