John Bailey, a Navy veteran living in Santa Paula, Calif., chats with fellow corpsmen, including Petty Officer 1st Class Allan C. Indiongco, the lead petty officer serving with Navy Personnel Office, 7th Marine Regiment, Petty Officer 3rd Class Kenneth Russell, a corpsman serving with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael C. Cardenas, a corpsman serving with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, during a dinner in celebration of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the 1st Marine Division at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., Feb. 1, 2013. Bailey served as a pharmacist's mate from 1943 to 1946, seeing battle in New Guinea, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa. Russell, a 21-year-old native of Sequim, Wash., and Cardenas, a 22-year-old native of Santa Maria, Calif., were surprised by Bailey's story of deploying to the Pacific in World War II.
