Marines from Delta Company, 4th Light Armor Reconnaissance (LAR), Quantico, Virginia, manning an M240E1 machine gun onboard a LAV (Light Armor Vehicle), prepare to move out, during Exercise TANDEM THRUST. The 4th LAR's mission is to patrol various checkpoints, engage any enemy, pushing them towards the main force. The LAR shadows the movement of the main force by guarding its flanks and screening. They will fight for information only when necessary, but are mostly the eyes of the movement. TANDEM THRUST 2001 a combined US, Australian, and Canadian military exercise for crisis action planning and execution of contingency response operations. The biannual exercise is held in the vicinity of Shoalwater Bay training area in Queensland, Australia.
