U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Juan Elizondo, left, and 1st Lt. Casey Kociuba, found and helped move a tortoise from harm’s way during a pause in training aboard the Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California. These Marines followed standard operating procedures, including guidance from Range Control and the Environmental Affairs Division, to move this tortoise from risk of foot traffic and vehicle traffic. The gloves are part of a standard method to reduce disease transmission among tortoises.. (Courtesy photo by MCAGCC ISD Environmental Affair’s Dr. Brian T. Henen)
