U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Robert B. Sofge Jr., Commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe and Africa, and Brig. Gen. Omar J. Randall, Deputy Commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces South and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve, pose for a photo with Marina De Colombia (Columbian Marine Corps) Comandante de la Fuerza Naval del Oriente, Brig. Gen. Adolfo Enrique Hernandez Ruiz, Commander of Naval Force East, during the African Maritime Forces Summit and Naval Infantry Leadership Symposium – Africa (AMFS/NILS-A), in Accra, Ghana, May 2, 2024. Randall attended NILS-A alongside Brazilian and Colombian Marine Corps leaders to discuss shared security challenges across the Southern Atlantic with African counterparts. Maritime forces in Western Africa and South America share many of the same challenges, ranging from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing to transnational criminal organizations.
AMFS and NILS-A is a strategic-level forum designed to address transnational maritime security challenges in African waters, bringing together partner nations with marine forces and naval infantry to develop interoperability, crisis response capabilities, and foster relationships that will improve Africa's maritime domain security.
