Andrew Zhao, J23-O Branch Chief, U.S. Transportation Command, poses for a portrait May 1, 2024, at U.S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. Zhao, who was born to Chinese political refugees and raised in California, embodies a mix of rich cultural heritage and dedicated military commitment. Inspired by Admiral Harry Harris, the first Asian-American four-star admiral in the US Navy, Zhao's journey through the Naval Academy and his faith-driven leadership, influenced by Francis Chan's teachings, reflect his deep-rooted commitment to service.
Zhao’s fellowship with the San Francisco Chinatown Community Development Center opened his eyes to municipal governance and community service, leading him to advocate for equitable transportation and parking solutions, he exclaimed. His upbringing in Silicon Valley contrasted with the socioeconomic diversity in Chinatown, where he discovered layers of the Chinese-American experience and historical struggles like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
For Zhao, serving in uniform is a way of giving back to a country that provided his family refuge and opportunity, embodying gratitude and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference. (DoD photo by Iain Page)
