Rita Baumgarten, widow of Harold “Hal” Baumgarten, converses with Maj. Gen. Joseph A. Dinonno, commander of the 29th Infantry Division following a ceremony honoring the 29th at the National Guard Monument situated above Omaha Beach, June 2, 2024. Private Baumgarten, a 29th Infantry Division soldier from Virginia, landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and was wounded five times in 32 hours of fighting, but survived to tell his story, passing away in 2016. Commemorative events such as these serve to honor the sacrifices U.S. service members made 80 years ago in securing peace and security, and inspiring future generations to value a collective vision of global peace.
