Ryan Shipkey, grandson of Sgt. Maj. of the Army Leon L. Van Autreve, pets a U. S. Army North caisson horse named in honor of his late grandfather at the in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Jun 13, 2024. The U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence Medical Noncommissioned Officers Academy hosted a ceremony honoring the fourth sergeant major of the Army and a highly decorated Soldier who participated in the invasion of Port Lyautey, Africa and served in Vietnam. The NCO Academy at Fort Sam Houston was renamed Van Autreve Hall in September 2002, six months after Van Autreve’s death, in honor of his contributions to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence and support to the academy’s mission. Caisson horses of the Fort Sam Houston Funeral Honors Platoon participate in full honor funerals with escort in Fort national cemetery.
