A Petri dish filled with mosquitoes is prepared for observation under a microscope at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., June 28, 2024. After a mosquito Gravid trap is retrieved, the mosquitoes are frozen to be later examined for any potential diseases such as the West Nile virus. When a disease is detected among the captured insects, public health technicians - following guidance from their major command - collaborate with local community experts to jointly share the information, maintaining open communication with the Shaw-Sumter community.
