Estelle Thomas, President of the Native Village of Paimiut, speaks with Arctic and Global Resilience office and Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies leaders during a roundtable discussion on July 30, 2024, on Joint Base-Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Thomas shared her perspective as a community leader and provided advice on how the DoD and Alaska Native communities can work together to address security challenges and opportunities. This meeting was a key part of a series of roundtable discussions with state, local, and Alaska Native communities facilitated by the Ted Stevens Center to discuss the new 2024 DoD Arctic Strategy. The goal of this trip was to gain insights and perspectives on U.S. Arctic security challenges and opportunities, and how the Department of Defense can work together with Alaska-based stakeholders to ensure an Arctic region that is peaceful, stable, prosperous, and cooperative.
